The Russian River area is also referred to as West County, and includes the towns of Guerneville, Forestville, Camp Meeker, Cazadero, Duncans Mills, Graton, Monte Rio, Rio Nido, Occidental and Villa Grande.
The largest Russian River town by far is Guerneville (gurn-ville, best not to call it guerneyville). In the 1800's, Guerneville was a logging community known as Stump town until the Guerne family founded the town in 1850. In the mid 1900's, Guerneville became popular with vacationers from San Francisco and surrounding area. Vacation homes were built with little to no heat source, to be used during the summer months only. Today, those summer homes have become year-round residences, where the new owners have added insulation and central heat.
In the 1970's, the Russian River area was discovered by San Francisco's gay population. Gay bars and resorts became the norm, rainbow flags lined the streets. To this day, Guerneville hosts gay themed weekends including Lazy Bear, Polar Bear and Women's weekend. Guerneville is also the venue for Sonoma County's annual Gay Pride parade in June.
The Russian River area has been know to flood, the last major flood taking place on New Years Eve, 2005. Many homes that have become victims to floods have subsequently been raised. Some homes added a garage on the bottom floor, with electrical outlets 6 feet off the ground. Other homes simply sit on stilts to allow the water to pass through. Most Russian River homeowners also own a canoe or kayak for obvious reasons.
The Russian River is the place to go when it gets hot. There are several public beaches and regional parks on the river that attract large crowds during the summer. The most popular is Johnson's Beach in Guerneville where you can rent canoes, kayaks, umbrellas and paddle boats. A food stand sells hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream and beer at prices that take you back to the 70's.
If you like Redwood trees and rivers, you'll like the Russian River area in West County.
