Rohnert Park CA claims to be "The Friendly City" in Sonoma County, but it is known by locals as "Alphabet City". When developers bought land from the Rohnert family, they planned a city of neighborhoods, where every neighborhood would have its own park. Every street and park name in each neighborhood was to begin with the same letter. The first neighborhood to be developed was Neighborhood "A" where you'll find Alicia Park and street names such as Avram, Alison, Allen and Adele. Neighborhood "B" is home to Benicia park and street names Burton, Bonnie, Brenda and Barbi. You get the idea. Except we don't call them neighborhoods, we call them sections. A Section, B Section, C Section ...
Rohnert Park has a lot of things but a downtown isn't one of them. The west side is home to big box stores including Target, Costco, Walmart and Home Depot. Other retail areas in Rohnert Park are strip malls with grocery stores as anchors. But this may all be changing soon. A large lot in the center of Rohnert Park that used to be home to State Farm Insurance is in the planning stages of becoming "Rohnert Crossing". The idea is to create a space where people will gather, such as a downtown plaza with mixed use retail and housing. A train station for SMART (Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit) will be built at Rohnert Crossing as well.
Rohnert Park is also home to the Graton Resort & Casino, Sonoma State University and the Green Music Center.
